An induction programme is often a student's first step into a new academic environment, but its significance extends far beyond introductions and orientation. It is an opportunity to help students understand the possibilities that lie ahead and encourage them to approach their academic journey with curiosity, confidence and an openness to explore.
As part of the TITE Induction Programme, our students had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Mutcha Shanmukha Rao, an experimental materials physicist specialising in functional nanomaterials and nanotechnology at the CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), Bhubaneswar. His interaction brought a research-oriented perspective to the programme, encouraging students to look at education not simply as a path to a degree, but as a foundation for discovery, problem-solving and innovation.
About Dr. Mutcha Shanmukha Rao/Author’s Bio
Dr. Mutcha Shanmukha Rao is an experimental materials physicist whose work focuses on functional nanomaterials and emerging technologies. He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Sciences from the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) at CSIR-IMMT, following his M.Sc. in Physics and B.Sc. degrees from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Srikakulam.
His research spans laser-induced graphene (LIG), functional oxide nanomaterials, semiconductor thin films and interface-engineered heterostructures, with applications in environmental photocatalysis and sensing technologies. His journey also reflects a strong commitment to research excellence. A recipient of the competitive CSIR-JRF and CSIR-SRF fellowships, he has contributed first-author research to international journals including Acta Materialia, Nanoscale, and Diamond and Related Materials. He has also authored a book chapter with CRC Press (Taylor & Francis), holds an Indian patent application, and has successfully contributed to technology licensing with industry partners.
Taking Learning Beyond the Classroom
Drawing from his own experience as a researcher, Dr. Shanmukha Rao's interaction encouraged our students to approach their education with a mindset of exploration and experimentation. His research journey demonstrates how fundamental concepts learned during academic study can eventually lead to specialised research and practical technological applications.
He highlighted the importance of taking learning beyond the basics, reminding students that “Learning does not have to stop at understanding established concepts. Asking questions, investigating possibilities and developing the confidence to experiment open pathways to innovation.”
His work with advanced materials and nanotechnology also provided an example of how seemingly specialised scientific ideas can address broader challenges. From environmental photocatalysis to sensing technologies, he showed that research can become meaningful when knowledge is directed towards solving real-world problems. This connection between learning and application encouraged our students to think about how their own technical and academic skills might eventually create value beyond the classroom.
Learning Through Persistence and Collaboration
Dr. Shanmukha Rao's academic journey, supported by competitive research fellowships and extensive research exposure, also reflected the importance of persistence. He mentioned that “Scientific progress often develops through repeated experimentation, analysis, and refinement.” This provided a valuable reminder for our students that setbacks and unsuccessful attempts are not necessarily failures; they can be important parts of the learning process.
His experience in presenting research at national and international conferences, participating in institutional initiatives and mentoring postgraduate students further highlights the importance of communication and collaboration. He further highlighted the value of collaboration, noting that “Technical knowledge becomes more impactful when it can be shared, discussed and developed collectively.”

The interaction with Dr. Shanmukha Rao added a research-driven dimension to our Induction Programme. His journey offered our students an example of how a foundation in science can evolve into specialised expertise, research contributions and technologies with practical applications.
As students begin their journey with us, the lessons reflected through Dr. Shanmukha Rao's experience encouraged them to remain curious, embrace experimentation and look at challenges as opportunities to learn. More importantly, his journey demonstrates that innovation begins with the willingness to ask questions—and grows through knowledge, persistence and the determination to turn ideas into meaningful solutions.
