From Curiosity to Capability: Dr. K. J. Sankaran Inspires Students at TITE Induction Programme

The beginning of college marks more than a transition into a new academic environment. It is the beginning of a journey where students discover their interests, develop new capabilities, and gradually shape their professional aspirations. Recognising the importance of giving students the right perspective at this formative stage. The TITE Induction Programme brought together students for an engaging introduction to the opportunities, challenges, and possibilities that lie ahead.

A key highlight of the programme was the interaction with Dr. K. J. Sankaran, Principal Scientist at CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), Bhubaneswar. His presence offered students an opportunity to hear from a scientist whose own journey reflects the value of curiosity, perseverance, continuous learning, and exploration beyond conventional academic boundaries.


About Dr. K. J. Sankaran/Author’s Bio

Dr. K. J. Sankaran has built an accomplished career at the intersection of materials science, engineering, and advanced research. He completed his BSc in Physics from Madurai Kamaraj University as a university rank holder in 2005, followed by an MSc from Anna University in 2007. He went on to pursue his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan, in 2013.

His academic journey was further enriched by postdoctoral research at Hasselt University, Belgium, where he worked through FWO/Marie-Curie programmes between 2014 and 2019, alongside research experience in Taiwan. Today, his work spans areas including diamond thin films, microwave plasma CVD, nanostructure fabrication, electron emission and microplasma measurements. With around 145 research publications, an h-index of 31 and more than 3,000 citations, his journey reflects years of sustained learning and scientific inquiry.

Drawing from this diverse academic and research experience, Dr. Sankaran's interaction with the students offered a broader perspective on what it means to build a meaningful career in engineering and related fields.

One of the strongest messages emerging from his journey was the importance of remaining curious. His transition from physics into the specialised field of materials science demonstrates how academic interests can evolve when students remain open to exploring new areas. For students beginning their engineering and management education, this perspective can encourage them to look beyond textbooks and examinations and develop a genuine interest in understanding how things work.

His international academic and research experience also underlined the value of stepping beyond familiar boundaries. Exposure to different institutions, research environments, and approaches can broaden one's thinking and create opportunities that may not initially seem obvious. Students were encouraged to view their college years as a time to explore, experiment, and identify their strengths rather than limiting themselves to a predetermined path.

Dr. Sankaran's professional journey also offers an important lesson in perseverance. From his early academic achievements to years of advanced research and his present role as a Principal Scientist, his career represents the cumulative impact of consistent learning and long-term dedication.

For students at the beginning of their academic journey, such an example reinforces the idea that professional success is rarely achieved overnight. Building expertise requires patience, discipline, adaptability, and the willingness to keep learning even when the path becomes challenging.

Dr. Sankaran's journey provided our students with a practical example of how curiosity can lead to exploration, exploration can lead to expertise, and sustained effort can eventually create meaningful professional impact.

As our students begin their journey here, the interaction serves as a valuable reminder that education is not confined to classrooms or curricula.
