Dr. Priya Ranjan (HOD & Professor), B.Tech. (IIT, Kharagpur), M.S. & Ph.D. (University of Maryland at College Park)
Priya Ranjan looks at engineering systems from nonlinear dynamics point of view. He got interested in bifurcations and chaos during his student days at IIT Kharagpur and analyzed switching power electronic converters for their notorious chaotic behavior and non-smooth bifurcations. He continued his interest in nonlinear dynamics in internet protocols and SoSE where multiple systems were being integrated with adhoc nonlinear rules at University of Maryland. He in particular realized the nonlinear role of delays and started using difference equation related methods to understand delay-differential equations based network resource allocation models which led to new insights in understanding global stability in the presence of arbitrary delays. These results can also be thought as provisioning inherent robustness to network protocol configurations in the context of TCP-RED. Currently, he is looking into taking biological cues to engineering systems and how simple models of mobile platforms which interact with real life wall-kind of structures with a goal to maintain a fixed distance can get chaotic due to limited visibility.
